European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos welcomed today the adoption of amendments to the electoral laws in Serbia, calling it "an important step towards free and fair elections."

"I welcome the adoption of four electoral laws by Serbia, following recommendations from the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR)," Kos wrote on the X network.

The European Commissioner added that "close cooperation with the Serbian authorities continues with the aim of adopting the two key remaining laws on the fight against corruption and the financing of political activities."

Yesterday, the majority MPs in the Serbian Parliament adopted amendments to four election laws, which were proposed to the parliament by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party MP Miroslav Petrašinović, while the opposition MPs were not in the parliament hall during the vote.

Opposition MPs claim that the government chose only five ODIHR recommendations "that hurt them the least" out of a total of 25, which do not solve the essential problems of the electoral process in Serbia.
