The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade announced that it has dismissed the criminal complaint against the former Chief of the Belgrade City Police Department, Veselin Milić, in the part in which he is charged with the criminal offense of assisting the perpetrator after the crime was committed in the "27" restaurant in Senjak, where Aleksandar Nešović Baja was killed, because, as the VJP states, there are no grounds for suspicion that a criminal offense for which he is being prosecuted ex officio was committed, N1 reports.
The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade announced that it has dismissed the criminal complaint against the former Chief of the Belgrade City Police Department, Veselin Milić, in the part in which he is charged with the criminal offense of assisting the perpetrator after the crime was committed in the "27" restaurant in Senjak, where Aleksandar Nešović Baja was killed, because, as the VJP states, there are no grounds for doubt that a criminal offense was committed for which he is being prosecuted ex officio.
The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office also states that in connection with the criminal report charging it with the criminal offense of failure to report a criminal offense and the perpetrator, it is continuing to undertake evidentiary actions.
"During the investigation conducted into the commission of the criminal offense of Aggravated Murder against AN (Aleksandra Nešović Baja, ed. N1) on May 12, 2026 in the restaurant "27", the prosecution determined from the evidence collected that there is no evidence indicating that the defendant committed the criminal offense of Assisting the Perpetrator After the Crime Committed, which he is charged with in the criminal report, and that the factual description of the actions provided in the criminal report regarding this criminal offense does not correspond to the facts established during the proceedings," the VJP announced.
"He was not, nor could he have been" at the "27" restaurant when Nešović was killed
Namely, as the VJP states, based on footage from surveillance cameras at the residence of the injured party Nešović and the suspect Milić, as well as the cameras of the "Coffee Dream" restaurant, then based on base stations and expert examination of the phones of the suspect's security personnel and the suspect's base stations, as well as analysis of the statements of the questioned witnesses, the suspect's defense and other evidence, "it is indisputably and unequivocally established that he was not, nor could he have been, at the scene of the incident, i.e. in the "27" restaurant, when, as is reasonably suspected, the criminal offense of Aggravated Murder and other criminal offenses were committed, i.e. that the suspect did not help the other defendants in this proceeding to remove traces of their commission by concealing the traces left by the commission of these criminal offenses."
There are grounds for suspicion that Milić had knowledge of the murder, but did not report it.
Regarding the criminal offense of Failure to Report a Criminal Offense and Perpetrator, the VJP states that the taking of evidentiary actions continues, because during the evidentiary actions taken so far, "it has been determined that there are grounds for suspicion that Veselin M. had knowledge of the event on the night of May 12, 2026 in the restaurant "27", that is, that he had knowledge that a criminal offense had been committed, and that as an official he failed to report the said criminal offense of which he learned in the performance of his official duties", states N1.
"The evidence collected provides grounds for suspicion that Veselin M. was informed by phone by the owner of the restaurant, suspect NL, about an incident in the restaurant, where other guests were at the time, on the night between May 12 and 13, and that upon learning of the criminal offenses that were being prosecuted ex officio, he did not report them to the competent authorities, although he was obliged to do so," the prosecutor's office specified.
The Prosecutor's Office also states that it has undertaken a series of evidentiary actions and ordered appropriate expert assessments in order to determine the aforementioned circumstances, and that the further course of the proceedings will depend on the content of the submitted evidentiary material.
Why was Milić arrested?
The now former chief of Belgrade police, Veselin Milić, was arrested along with 10 other people for the murder of Aleksandar Nešović Baja in the "27" restaurant in Senjak on May 12th.
It is suspected that Nešović was shot by Saša Vuković, also known as Boske. It was initially suspected that the crime was committed in the presence of Milić and that he, along with three other police officers from his security, participated in removing traces of the crime. On June 3, the VJP announced that criminal charges against the three police officers had been dropped, also due to lack of evidence.
Milić was first questioned on May 15, the day of his arrest, when he presented his defense, and a day later he was ordered to be detained for up to 30 days. He was questioned again on June 3, due to new evidence, the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office announced.
Previously, Milić's apartment and official premises were searched on May 29, 14 days after his arrest.
After the second hearing, Milić's defense attorney Nemanja Vasiljević provided the media with a portion of Milić's alleged statement in which the former Belgrade police chief accuses his colleagues of framing him and of not presenting the evidence they provided in the criminal complaint to the prosecutor.
Nešović's body was found on May 21 in a barrel in the territory of the Inđija municipality, in the presence of public prosecutors from the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office.
