In North Macedonia, electric scooters are now only allowed to be driven by people over the age of 18, at a speed of no more than 20 kilometers per hour.
This is provided for by amendments to the Law on Road Traffic Safety, the aim of which, as explained, is to increase the safety of drivers of light electric vehicles, as well as all other road users.
According to the new rules, only a person who has reached the age of 18 will be able to operate an electric scooter, instead of the previous age of 14.
The maximum permitted speed is limited to 20 kilometers per hour on bike paths and lanes, while the limit of six kilometers per hour remains on sidewalks, pedestrian and mixed paths.
When crossing a roadway or pedestrian crossing, if there is no bike path or lane, electric scooter drivers are required to get off the vehicle and push it, as stipulated in the amendments to the Law on Road Traffic Safety, which were adopted by the Parliament of North Macedonia on June 30.
The new rules prohibit carrying another person on a scooter and riding under the influence of alcohol. A protective helmet is mandatory for all drivers, as is the wearing of a reflective vest in conditions of reduced visibility and at night.
In addition to fines, violations are subject to temporary confiscation of the electric scooter for 30 days, while in the event that a child is operating the scooter, the parents or guardians are responsible.
