Vučić: Elections will be called very soon

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said today that elections will be "called very soon."

Vučić said that Serbia is a democratic society and that the decision made by citizens in the elections will be respected.

"Elections will be called very soon. People in elections always make unerring decisions, ultimately, in a rational way, thinking about their families," Vučić told reporters after touring the construction site of the bridge over the Velika Morava near Svilajnac.

Asked about allegations that he plans to return to the prime minister's position without an election, Vučić said that he would not give himself a position for which he did not seek the people's vote.

"There is an option at this moment: I resign, the Government resigns, and in a day or two the Parliament elects me Prime Minister if I have a majority. That option exists, but it is not an option for me, even though everything is according to the law, legal, even legitimate. I will not give myself a position for which I did not seek the people's vote. When and if I seek the people's vote for that position, only when I receive the people's vote can I possibly become it," said the President of Serbia.

He assessed that the "most likely" option is for the Government to resign or to inform the President and the Serbian Parliament that it does not have the necessary majority.

"The moment I receive notification from the Government and the Parliament, I will call elections for MPs. For some time, a few days or two weeks at most, I will remain president because I have many important tasks related to the state, and I will not participate in the campaign. Then I will join the 'United Serbia' list after I resign, leave two state offices and submit all the necessary documentation. Then I will go from place to place in Serbia to seek people's support for the mandate of Prime Minister," Vučić said.
