The wife and son of Ratko Mladić, a Hague convict and wartime commander of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS), are traveling to The Hague today to visit Mladić, whose health condition is very poor.
This was stated by Mladić's son Darko for Radio Television of the Republic of Serbia (RTRS), stating that his father's health condition deteriorated last week and that the family spoke with doctors on Friday, who stated that he had "a few more weeks left."
He added that they received a written report from doctors from The Hague on Monday.
"They informed us that they were canceling some part of the therapy, that they believed that it was no longer effective and that he was literally dying, but we were not told which therapy was being canceled and why, nor which council made that decision, or which specialist composed that council. It is worrying that they announced that he would not last much longer," said Darko Mladić.
He announced that a specialist doctor from Serbia would examine Mladic on Friday and speak with doctors in The Hague, adding that his father's transfer to Serbia had previously been requested.
"We did not ask for his release, but for him to be transferred to Serbia to serve his sentence, so that he could receive, if at all possible, any better care in Serbia," said Darko Mladić.
He added that "in the final days, the family will be with him every day."
"They said that the time he has left is measured in a few weeks, but essentially we hope that the Tribunal will act in the same way as in the case of many others before my father and allow him to be transferred to Serbia, so that his family can be with him every day in his last days," said Darko Mladić.
The former commander of the VRS Main Staff, General Ratko Mladić, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a final and binding verdict.
The Hague Tribunal found him guilty of genocide in Srebrenica, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
