British Prime Minister Theresa May today called on the British people to unite in 2017 and move on after the bitter divisions brought about by Brexit, the exit of Great Britain from the EU.
In her Christmas message, May said that Britain needs to unite and use the opportunity to build a new role in the world when it leaves the European Union (EU).
About 52 percent of the British voted in the referendum in June of this year to leave the EU, and discussions about Brexit marked the whole year.
She said that she wants to formally initiate the process of Britain's exit from the EU by the end of March 2017, which could last two years.
"As we left the EU, we must seize a historic opportunity to build a brave new role in the world and move into the future united," said Theresa May. She said that she plans to finish negotiations on Brexit and the future relationship between Britain and the EU by the end of 2019, but added that the transition period may last even longer.
