US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promised Ukraine the continuation of the joint fight against the German-Russian gas pipeline "Nord Stream 2", which, in his opinion, undermines European security.
Ukraine "has no greater friend than the United States" in the fight against "Russian aggression", Pompeo said during yesterday's meeting with the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Pavlo Klimkin, in Washington.
"We will continue to work together to stop the Nord Stream 2 project, which undermines Ukraine's strategic and economic security and threatens to further threaten the sovereignty of European states that depend on Russian gas," Pompeo told reporters.
The head of the State Department stated that the US does not want "European friends to fall prey to the political and economic manipulation" that Russia is trying to carry out in Ukraine.
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will double the amount of gas coming from Russia to Germany, bypassing the current transit countries Poland and Ukraine.
Germany claims, with the support of France and Austria, that the new gas pipeline will ensure a more stable and cheaper supply of gas.
Pompeo also reiterated the US position on non-recognition of Russia's annexation of Crimea.
