Swiss police raided a mosque in the northern city of Winterthur, Swiss officials announced today.
According to their statements, the police operation in the An Nur mosque is still ongoing, and the regional prosecutor based in nearby Zurich will soon make a statement.
The Swiss daily Tages Anzeiger writes that the investigators are particularly focused on the new preacher of the mosque, who is from Somalia.
According to the newspaper, several young men who regularly visited the mosque later went to join the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
After extremist attacks in Europe in recent years, the Swiss authorities have increased controls and surveillance of suspected extremists who could cause violence.
The Swiss intelligence service estimates that since 2001, 77 people "motivated by jihad" have left Switzerland to go to conflict zones, and that a large number of them have gone to Iraq and Syria. According to the service, 21 of them are dead, while others are still active in conflict zones or have returned to Switzerland.
