A ceremony honoring the 86 people killed by an Islamist extremist when he drove a truck into a crowd in Nice during the July 14 national holiday was organized today in that city in the presence of French President Francois Hollande.
Today's ceremony was organized on the hill overlooking the promenade in Nice where the massacre took place.
In addition to the French president, the family, injured people, religious representatives, the main political leaders of France and the local authorities of Nice are attending the ceremony.
The names of the 86 victims were read and 86 white roses were placed in the center of the square where the ceremony took place.
The July 14 attack in Nice was intended to undermine national unity, but that sinister intention will not succeed, French President Hollande said at the ceremony.
"The terrorists' monstrous goal is to create violence to breed division. But that sinister enterprise will fail: unity, freedom, humanity will ultimately prevail," Hollande said.
For him, the act committed by the Tunisian when he drove his truck into the crowd was an attack on the hospitality of the city, which attracts French and international tourists with its "comfort of living".
The victims of the attack were of 19 different nationalities, and they were not of the same origin, religion, skin color, the French president pointed out and added that these victims had one thing in common that must not be extinguished.
"Those men, women, children wanted to live freely," Hollande said.
