The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, said today that Great Britain will most likely start the procedure for leaving the European Union at the beginning of next year.
Tusk said after an informal meeting of 27 EU members in Bratislava, held without the presence of British Prime Minister Theresa May, that he had received information that the procedure would not be launched as quickly as some European leaders hoped.
"May has announced that it is almost impossible to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty during this year," said the President of the European Council.
According to him, Britain will be ready to formally start leaving the Union in January or February next year.
