Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said she will take "preparatory steps" to separate Scotland from the UK to keep the independence option open after the June 23 referendum in which most British but not Scottish citizens opted to leave the EU.
"If we assess that our interests cannot be protected in the United Kingdom, independence must be one of the options that Scotland will be able to consider," she said in an address to the Scottish Parliament today.
The Scottish government will therefore, as she added, "take preparatory steps to ensure that this option is open to the Scottish Parliament if it deems it necessary."
