Several Air France flight attendants refused to wear the veil when landing at the airport in Tehran, the union of the French airline announced this evening, which requested that the wearing of the veil be on a voluntary basis.
Air France flights on the Paris-Tehran route are supposed to start on April 17, but an internal message was sent to staff according to which flight attendants are "advised to wear trousers, a comfortable jacket and a scarf to cover their hair when exiting the plane at Tehran airport".
"Since that message, we have received calls every day from concerned flight attendants, who told us that they will not wear the headscarf," the union's press release states, adding that punishments are also mentioned for flight attendants who do not comply with these measures.
The management of the airline told the French press that the crew as well as foreign passengers should respect the laws of the country they are coming to.
"Iranian law mandates the wearing of a veil that covers the hair in public places and this applies to all women who are on the territory of Iran. This obligation, which does not apply during the flight, is respected by all international airlines that cooperate with Iran," added the management of Air France reminding that this measure is already applied on flights to Saudi Arabia and once on the Paris-Tehran route.
