Moscow has suspended all work related to the South Stream gas pipeline project, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Earlier, EU Ambassador to Russia Vigaudas Ušackas said that the EU is ready to discuss the implementation of the South Stream project, if it agrees with the third energy package, reports B92.
"The South Stream project does not exist, it is closed, nothing is being done about it. The project was terminated due to the position of the European Commission," said Peskov.
The Russian envoy to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, announced that negotiations on the South Stream project, which would satisfy European demand for Russian natural gas, would be on the table if they were renewed.
At the end of 2014, Moscow announced the cancellation of the South Stream gas pipeline project, which was supposed to pass through the Black Sea, through Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia to Italy and Austria. After the cancellation of the project, Russia announced plans to establish the TurkStream gas pipeline, which would replace South Stream.
