In January, Greek police tried to arrest Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected mastermind of the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people. However, that operation failed.
A BBC source said that Abaud was supposed to be arrested in the Greek capital before the anti-terrorist operation in Belgium, but that did not happen.
Abaud ran the Belgian terrorist cell by telephone from Athens.
Abaud was killed in a standoff with French police five days after the November 13 attack.
The operation in Greece was supposed to take place before the one carried out on January 15 by the security forces in Verve, in the east of Belgium. On that occasion, two suspected jihadists were killed.
It remains unknown how Abaud eluded the Greek police.
