The police of the southern Italian district of Reggio Calabria announced today that they seized 344 kilograms of pure cocaine with an estimated value of around 70 million euros.
The drugs were seized over the weekend in the large industrial port of Gioia Tauro in Calabria, one of the main ports through which various things are smuggled into Italy, police said.
The drugs were found in two containers. The first quantity of 55 kilograms was in a container that arrived from Brazil and was going to Slovenia, and it was declared that it was transporting aluminum.
A second, much larger amount of 289 kilograms was also found in a container from Brazil bound for Trieste. That container was declared to contain coffee.
According to the Italian police, around 932 kilograms of cocaine have been seized in that port since the beginning of the year.
Customs officers seized around 33 kilograms of cocaine in the Port of Bar yesterday. The drugs are in Port Bar found in a container full of coffee sacks shipped from Brazil.
