Humanity won: Brave Parisians opened their doors to foreigners on the night of the attack

The humanity of the French people was quickly proven on the night of the terrorist attacks in which at least 127 people died.

Moments after the French capital was rocked by the attacks, the hashtag #porteouverte - which literally means 'open door' - appeared on Twitter for anyone who was on the streets of Paris at the time or couldn't get to their hotels.

"If you are in Paris and need shelter, find someone using the hashtag 'PorteOuverte'. People are offering shelter. Be safe," read one of the messages.

Another simply read: "To people in Paris: The #PorteOuverte hashtag on Twitter is full of people willing to take you in for the night if you're on the streets or can't get back to where you're staying. Contact them. DON'T STAY OUT. Be safe ".

And no matter how dark and sinister our world can be, humanity and love will prevail. Look at #PorteOuverte if in France/need a safe place.

In another act of kindness, taxi drivers in Paris also turned off their meters. With the city under curfew for the first time since 1944 and most metro stations closed, this proved to be the main source of traffic that night.

"Every time something this bad happens, the human spirit always prevails," is one of the messages on Twitter.

"That's why terrorists will never win".
