The European Parliament did not accept a bill that would allow EU members to decide for themselves whether to grow and import GMOs for use in human and animal nutrition.

579 out of a total of 751 deputies voted against the bill submitted by the European Commission, the New York agency "Bloomberg" reports.

Taking into account the different attitudes of European countries regarding the safety of GMO organisms, the European Commission proposed a law in April that would allow members to decide independently whether to grow and import GMO products.

"Member states must take responsibility and make a decision together at the EU level, instead of introducing national bans," said today the deputy and member of the Committee for Environmental Protection of the European Parliament, Giovanni la Via.
