Italian customs officers seized 49 kilograms of pure cocaine hidden in a container with frozen squid, a type of squid, from the ship from Arentina.
The prosecutor from Reggio di Calabria Cafiero de Raho said today that the street value of the confiscated cocaine is more than 10 million euros.
The cocaine was discovered in the port of Gioia Tauro, which is believed to be under the control of the 'Ndrangeta criminal organization. Investigators say the 'Ndrangheta, which has a base in Calabria, is the biggest cocaine smuggler in Europe, which is why police and customs have stepped up control at the port.
So far, it has not been announced that there have been any arrests in connection with the confiscated cocaine.
