British Prime Minister David Cameron said today that he is ready to order airstrikes against the positions of Islamic State extremists in Libya and Syria to prevent attacks on the streets of his country.
"If there is a threat to Britain or our people, the streets, we can stop it by taking immediate action against that threat," Cameron told reporters after arriving on a visit to Indonesia.
Cameron pointed out that, as prime minister, he is ready to take such action, in the event that threats come from Syria, Libya or some other country.
Cameron is scheduled to meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo later in the day to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the fight against Islamic extremists.
Last Sunday, Cameron, in an interview with the American TV network NBC, said that Great Britain is ready to cooperate with the United States to destroy the "caliphate" established by the extremists of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
He stated that his wish is for his country to do more, but that he must "have the parliament with him".
"We are talking and considering at this moment, together with the opposition parties in Britain, what else we can do. But do not doubt, we are determined to cooperate with you on the destruction of the caliphate in both countries," Cameron said.
Members of the British Parliament voted against military action in Syria two years ago, the BBC recalled.
