Russia is preparing a law that will enable the freezing of assets of other countries as a reciprocal measure against the seizure of Russian assets abroad, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said today.

Medvedev said at the government session that the new law will give courts in Russia the possibility to "limit the immunity of a foreign state based on the principle of reciprocity", which, he said, is especially relevant in the context of "illegal actions" against the Russian state and property.

Some of the Russian state assets were recently temporarily frozen in France and Belgium at the request of the former shareholders of the Yukos oil company as part of the implementation of the decision of the Arbitration Court in The Hague according to which Russia should pay compensation of 50 billion dollars to the shareholders of the disbanded Yukos, whose owner Mikhail Khodorkovsky spent ten years in prison for tax evasion.

Russia rejected the Hague court's decision and warned that it intended to "defend its interests".

The proposed law, which will be considered by the Duma in September, will not allow seizure of property of heads of state, embassies, ships or planes.
