The US delivered 10 armored vehicles of the "Hammer" type to Ukraine as part of military assistance for "the fight against separatist forces in the east of the country supported by Russia".
Ukrinform reports that the shipment was met by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko at the "Boryspol" airport in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian agency states that during the handing over, Poroshenko inspected the shipment of highly mobile multifunctional vehicles and personally sat behind the wheel of one of them, in order to test it on the airport runway.
The Ukrainian president announced that after being equipped, all vehicles will be sent "first of all, to highly mobile landing units, which perform tasks in the zone of anti-terrorist operations".
"I want to thank our partners - the USA, for all-round support to Ukraine. It is a real and true confirmation of the strategic partnership between our countries," Poroshenko said, thanking Washington for its "consistent and firm position in resolving the conflict in the Donetsk Basin."
Poroshenko thanked the US for considering Russia an aggressor and for the initiative and persistence when it comes to extending the sanctions against Moscow, according to the Ukrainian agency.
The Ukrainian president announced that in the next 45 days, Ukraine will receive the remaining "Hammers", provided for in the agreement with Washington, according to AP.
Poroshenko's cabinet announced that the US will deliver 230 "Hummer" to Ukraine, the US news agency recalls, adding that the administration of US President Barack Obama announced the provision of military "non-lethal" aid in the amount of 75 million dollars, but that it "refrained from offering lethal equipment , despite calls from Congress to do so".
Poroshenko also announced in the middle of the month that Ukrainian reconnaissance units "will finally receive British Saxon armored personnel carriers."
Ukrinform then reminded that the USA decided to give Ukraine several "Raven" drone systems, 30 armored multipurpose "Hummers" and 200 jeeps of the same type, worth approximately 75 million dollars.
