The founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has accepted the proposal that Swedish prosecutors listen to him, but in the Embassy of Ecuador in London, where he has been hiding from the authorities for years, his lawyer said today.
"We will cooperate in the investigation, he accepts that," Per Samuelson said, adding that his client was "happy" about the prosecution's offer and progress in the investigation into the rapes in Sweden attributed to him, which Assange denies.
The Swedish prosecutor's office today proposed to come to London to question Assange.
Ecuador, which has been providing asylum to Assange in its embassy in London since June 2012, assessed today that the Swedish prosecution needed too much time to agree to come to the hearing in London, instead of asking for Assange's deportation to Sweden.
"If Ecuador's proposal, offered 1.000 days ago" to hear Asnaz at the Embassy in London, "a lot of money and nerves would have been saved," Ecuador's head of diplomacy, Ricardo Patino, said on Twitter.
"On Monday, it will be 1.000 days that Assange has been in our embassy in London. From the first day, we have suggested that they come and take his statement, which has not been accepted so far," said Patino.
Assange fears that the rape charge is just a way to get him arrested and extradited to the US to face trial for espionage because WikiLeaks released thousands of classified US documents a few years ago.
