British police said they are reviewing further surveillance of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has taken refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe told local radio today that the surveillance was being reviewed because constant surveillance was "draining police resources".

Assange sought refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault charges.

He has denied he is guilty and said he fears he could be extradited to the US to stand trial over his work at WikiLeaks, which released hundreds of thousands of classified diplomatic documents.

British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said last Sunday that so far the police surveillance of the Embassy in central London has cost 10 million pounds (13,5 million euros).
