Islamic State terrorists are planning to attack passenger planes in major European cities before Christmas, according to experts, the British Sunday Express reports, and B92 reports.
The plan, which became known in the last two months, is that fighters of the Islamic State will attack planes traveling to major European destinations.
The threat is being taken very seriously, and the solution could be to ban any hand luggage, a senior official said.
There is also a possibility that mobile phones and other electronic devices will be banned in airplane cabins, due to the threat of an attack, which, according to the Sunday Express, is planned to be in the style of "September 11".
The warning came after Whitehall officials acknowledged that an attack was a possibility, especially given the fact that large numbers of jihadists are returning from fighting Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
An airport security official told the Sunday Express that they had been told five planes were targeted before Christmas.
"They are waiting for someone big," this paper quoted an unnamed source as saying. He added that the threat is real.
Another well-placed security official said that discussions were held on the subject, and how to prevent such a thing, and one of the solutions was to ban hand luggage.
High-level negotiations continue, and it goes to the Government, but little has been done so far, he says.
This paper learns that only major European cities are concerned.
Last Sunday, Theresa May, the Secretary of State, said there was a danger and that a large number of Islamists were planning attacks in the UK.
She stated that the threats are different and that it is not only organized groups, but also violent individuals who can carry out an attack anywhere.
May then stated that attention must be directed across borders, and to all possible threats.
Scotland Yard did not comment on the claims.
The spokesman of the Ministry of Transport did not want to comment either. He only added that attention is constantly paid to airport security.
