The European Union's (EU) chief negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier, rejected today the possibility of putting a time limit on the so-called "backstop" provision on the border between the two Irelands in the Brexit deal, saying it would defeat the purpose of its existence.
Ahead of the meeting in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Barnije told Deutschlandfunk radio that the essence of the protective measure "backstop" is to provide a credible guarantee for Ireland that there will be no hard border with Northern Ireland after Brexit.
He rejected the possibility that London directly negotiates with Dublin on the disputed border issue between the two Irelands, stating that the issue does not concern only Ireland, but rather all the countries that are part of the EU common market.
"It's not just about Ireland. Every piece of goods that goes from Great Britain to Ireland enters the common market, so it's not just about Ireland, but also Germany, France, Poland, it's about the whole common market," he said. is Barnier.
