The bodies of two women were pulled from the ruins of a small residential building that was swept away by a landslide in the southern Swiss region of Ticino where heavy rains fell, Swiss police announced today. Regional police said two women, aged 34 and 38, were found dead, while four people, including a 44-year-old Italian man, were injured when a landslide swept away their three-story apartment building in Davesko-Soranje, not far from Lugano. Police are searching the area in case anyone else is under the rubble, according to AFP. After several weeks of heavy rains, the southern region of Ticino has been hit by heavy floods that have worsened after the overflow of Lake Lugano in several places, and the overflow of Lake Maggiore is also threatened. The main road leading to Davesko was closed this morning, as were several roads around Lake Lugano. Residents in Kjas were evacuated due to the second landslide. The Swiss National Meteorological Institute announced yesterday that between 24 and 50 millimeters of rain fell in 70 hours. Due to the rain in the previous days, several roads were already closed, basements were flooded and patients from hospitals in the area were evacuated. A landslide swept away a house in the Lugano region last Sunday, killing a mother and a small child.
