The first zoo dedicated to microbes opened in Amsterdam

The zoo in Amsterdam has opened a pavilion dedicated only to microbes, the Dutch media reported today.

The project of opening a pavilion called Mikropia, which is located in the city center, cost ten million euros.

"Zoos traditionally show only a small part of nature, special large animals. We wanted to show micro nature and develop an interest in microbiology," said Haig Balian, director of the Royal Amsterdam Zoo. "We want to show visitors that everything in nature is connected and that microbes are a fundamental part of that connection," added Balian.

Although associated with dirt and disease, some microbes are essential for human survival. Every human being has about 1,5 kilograms of microbes in their body and on their skin. Some microorganisms are used for biofuels and wastewater treatment.
