The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Joška Fischer, believes that Germany should send weapons to the Kurds to fight against the forces of the Islamic State.
In a statement to Bild, the president of the Green party deviated from the original ideology of his party, and advocated an armed resolution of the conflict in Iraq.
"A terrorist organization like ISIS cannot be stopped by any barricades. We should send weapons to the Kurds, we have an obligation to help them," Fischer said.
Fischer also reminded of the provisions of the criminal code of Germany.
"Our law requires every citizen to help a victim in a serious crime. In this case, it is about genocide, and Kurdistan is the only remaining factor of stability in Iraq," added Fischer.
Although German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that Germany will go to the limits of what is legally and politically possible when it comes to sending weapons, Masoud Berzani, the leader of the Iraqi Kurds, called on Germany to help.
"We expect Germany to supply us with weapons and ammunition so that we can fight the terrorists of the Islamic State. We hope that they will also provide us with logistical help, and what we need the most are anti-tank mines," said Berzani.
