Turkey's High Electoral Commission confirmed on Friday that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is the first president elected in direct elections.
The president of the commission, Sadi Guven, said that Erdogan was "elected as the 12th president of the Republic of Turkey" with 51,79 percent of the vote.
Turkey's presidential election was held on August 10, and Erdogan is scheduled to take office on August 28.
Erdogan earlier said Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party was likely to choose a new prime minister next Sunday at a meeting of top party officials.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is mentioned as one of the people who could become the new prime minister of Turkey, writes the Associated Press.
Although the office of Turkey's president is largely ceremonial, Erdogan has announced that he intends to strengthen the presidency and exercise rare powers, such as presiding over cabinet meetings.
