British Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab said today that Great Britain and the European Union may not be able to reach an agreement on the exit by October, which they have set as the deadline.
Rab said there was "a possibility to continue after that".
Britain and the EU want to reach an agreement on the terms of the separation and the future relationship before the EU summit in October to allow time for the deal to be approved individually by the members of the Union before the UK leaves on March 29.
However, negotiations are at a standstill and Great Britain is speeding up plans in case there is no agreement.
Raab told a committee of Britain's upper house of parliament that both sides were aiming for a deal to be reached by the summit "but there could be some backlog".
"I am convinced that a deal is within reach," Rab said.
