The Battle of Kursk was the largest mechanized engagement in history. It lasted from July to August 1943, and was opened by the Germans on July 5 when they launched their summer offensive, "Operation Citadel".
It ended with the defeat of the Germans, who failed to break through the front in an offensive for the first time since the beginning of the war.
The Germans entered the Battle of Kursk with 780.000 soldiers, about 3.000 tanks and 10.000 artillery pieces. On the other hand, the Soviets were waiting for them with almost two million soldiers, more than 5.000 tanks and 25.000 artillery pieces.
The culmination of the skirmishes was the Battle of Prokhorovka, which is still the largest tank battle in history.
