Tonight, at the request of Russia, the UN Security Council began the 13th extraordinary session on the crisis in Ukraine, due to the increasing escalation of violence in that country.
Russia's ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said before the session that he would request an "immediate cessation of violence" in Ukraine.
He also said at the session of the Security Council that the authorities in Kyiv destroyed the last hope for the implementation of the Geneva agreement of April 17 on the solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
The regime in Kiev, encouraged by Western sponsors, resorted to the massive use of military force and thus literally killed the last hope for the realization of the Geneva Agreement, said Churkin.
Those who gave and executed the criminal orders to start the bloodshed will bear full responsibility before the Ukrainian people, he emphasized and warned against any external interference in the development of events in Ukraine.
British Ambassador to the UN Mark Lyall-Grant called on Russia to "refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and propaganda and to commit to de-escalating the dangerous situation."
He added that "peaceful activists" as Russia calls them, do not have the means to shoot down Ukrainian helicopters, AFP reported.
