Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said that in the event of an attack, Russia will use atomic weapons for defense, Itar-Tas reported.
"It is possible to experiment with the deployment of conventional weapons on strategic carriers, but it should be borne in mind that in the event of an attack on us, in accordance with the adopted doctrine, we will unconditionally in certain situations resort to the defense of higher state interests using atomic weapons," said the deputy of the Russian Prime Minister in the Duma.
He added that any attacker or group of attackers would have to be aware of this and that this possibility is the main factor for refraining from provocations or attacks on Russia.
"We have never downplayed the role of nuclear weapons in defense," Rogozin said.
