Today, the leaders of the European Union (EU) will sign a free trade agreement in Tokyo, which is presented as historic against the protectionism of the US President Donald Trump, France Press reported.
The presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker, are staying in China before Japan, where the 20th EU-China summit is being held.
"Multilateralism is under threat and it is an unprecedented attack since the end of World War II," Juncker said after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"We can still avoid conflict and chaos," Tusk said.
The Tokyo meeting was originally scheduled for last Sunday in Brussels, but Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was forced to cancel his visit due to flooding in western Japan that killed more than 200 wasps.
The agreement between the EU and Japan envisages a free trade area covering almost one third of the world's gross domestic product (GDP).
That agreement is a "strong sign" against American protectionism, said European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom.
