Turkish actor Halit Ergenc, better known as "Suleiman the Magnificent" along with his wife Berguzar Korel, joined thousands of protesters in Istanbul who express their dissatisfaction against the ambitious plans of the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The famous actor made a human shield with the protesters to defend themselves from the violent police who attacked them with tear gas and water cannons.
On his Facebook page, Halit publishes news related to the protest every day, and it is not at all clear to him how Erdogan can destroy a hundred-year-old park.
Demonstrators in Istanbul began as protests of the Right to the City movement, which came on May 27 to prevent excavators from uprooting and tearing down hundred-year-old trees in Gezi Park ahead of the construction of a shopping center.
Even after the excavators came to protect the strong police force, the citizens did not give up, but the protests intensified.
Tents were set up in Taksim, and when the police closed all approaches to the square on May 31, the protests escalated. Tens of thousands of citizens from all parts of the city walked across the bridge over the Bosphorus, which connects the European and Asian parts of the city, which is otherwise closed to pedestrians.
