Austrian Interior Minister Herbert Kikl told Germany that Austria will not accept any refugees from that country.
"We will not take over anyone for whom we are not responsible, period!", Kikl emphasized in a statement to the Viennese daily "Estereich", reacting to the announcement of his German departmental colleague Horst Seehofer that he will force Austria to accept the readmission agreement by mass return from the border.
He said that he had two conversations with Seehofer and that both times it was promised that the refugees would not return.
He announced that German Chancellor Angela Merkel will now hold talks with the officials of Italy and Greece.
"However, to make everything clear, we will not sign an agreement that would be detrimental to Austria even in 100 years," said Kikl.
He announced that Austria will react to stricter controls on the German side of the border.
"In the future, we will generally increase control on the southern border. This will relieve Austria, but also Germany. We are transferring the pressure further so that one day they will be where the problem is, which is at the external border of the EU," explained Kikl.
He assessed that platforms for asylum seekers in North Africa can only be a medium-term solution, if everyone participates in it, reports Tanjug.
According to him, it must be clear that it will not be possible to submit asylum applications in those centers.
Kikl believes that these centers should be managed by North African countries with financial support from the EU.
