Pope Benedict XVI today asked for a "dignified life" for all migrants and refugees in an address in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
"Let those people everywhere be provided with refuge and let them be helped," the pope said before the gathered faithful.

"That mission is important now that we are celebrating the International Day of Migrants and Refugees," he added, calling on Catholics to be "close to those who suffer and do not have a voice that can be heard."

The Pope described the migrants as "bearers of faith and hope in the world".
In yesterday's edition of the official Vatican newspaper "L'Osservatore Romano", Cardinal Antonio Maria Veljo, president of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Displaced Persons, condemned the "deplorable" situation of refugees from Syria, whose number (more than half a million) could double in in the coming months.
