Russian President Vladimir Putin assessed today that the summit between the leaders of the USA and North Korea reduced the threat of a large-scale military conflict.
In a meeting with North Korean parliament speaker Kim Jong Nam in the Kremlin, Putin said Russia "welcomes and highly values" the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, held in Singapore on Tuesday.
He said that tensions over North Korea "have worried the whole world because they could have serious consequences, including a major military conflict," according to the Associated Press.
The meeting between Trump and Kim, the Russian leader added, helped "stop that unfavorable scenario and increase the chances of solving all problems by peaceful and diplomatic means."
Kim Jong Nam handed the Russian president a letter from Kim Jong Un, whom Putin invited again today to visit Russia.
"I would like to confirm our invitation to Comrade Kim Jong Un to visit Russia," Putin told Kim Jong Nam.
Putin said that one of the possibilities for that meeting is the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, in the Far East, which will be held this year from September 11 to 13, France Press reports.
The invitation to visit Russia was already conveyed to Kim Jong Un by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during their meeting at the end of May.
The historic summit between Trump and Kim ended with the signing of a joint document in which Kim Jong Un committed to the "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" but made no mention of the "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization" the US had talked about before the meeting. Trump said the US would suspend joint military exercises with South Korea, which he described as "very provocative".
