King Juan Carlos of Spain lost the title of honorary president of the WWF Spanish chapter because of the scandal that broke out after his elephant hunting in Botswana.
"Members of the World Organization for the Protection of Nature for Spain voted at the general assembly to withdraw the honorary position from King Juan Carlos," the statement of the organization points out, indicating that the king's safari is incompatible with the organization's main goal - the preservation of endangered species.
The decision came after sharp public criticism of the king's African expedition, during which the 74-year-old monarch fell and broke his hip.
In the context of a deep economic crisis and high unemployment, the king's trip to Botswana, which according to Spanish media cost 30.000 euros, caused a storm of indignation in the country.
Juan Carlos was even forced to publicly apologize to the nation.
The King of Spain has been WWF's Honorary President for Spain since its inception in 1968.
