Russia and the US are not on the threshold of an arms race or a cold war, but it is difficult to understand Washington's motives for developing anti-missile defense, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today in Moscow.
"I don't think we are on the threshold of some kind of arms race, a cold war.
The Cold War ended a long time ago, Russia and the USA are not adversaries, we cooperate closely on issues of international security. "Confrontation is not our choice, and I don't think that reasonable politicians in the US want any kind of conflict," Lavrov said.
The Russian minister added that if the US continues to develop anti-missile defense as planned, certain risks may arise for Russia's strategic nuclear forces.
"Our logic is quite simple and understandable. If weapons are deployed near our borders that can potentially disable our strategic weapons and lower the level of our security, then we respond with measures that cannot allow this," Lavrov said.
The regular annual media conference of the head of Russian diplomacy is underway in Moscow.
