"Why don't we use the confiscated money and assets of drug dealers for an international fund against drugs and crime under the control of the UN," Sarkozy said at the opening of a meeting of eight developed countries (G8) on drug trafficking.
"That fund would have only one task - to support the countries most affected by drug trafficking. The leadership would be left to the UN, which is the most competent for that, and that would guarantee the efficiency and quality of that fund," said Sarkozy.
According to him, the fight against smuggling is not only the seizure of narcotics, but also money. "We need to deprive drug dealers of the means for their crimes. We need to punish them, not only with heavy prison sentences but also with confiscation of their property," said the French president.
At the meeting, Sarkozy also proposed improving the exchange of information between countries.
