The Italian weekly "Espresso", referring to the "WikiLeaks" telegram, writes that Carla del Ponte, when she was the chief prosecutor of The Hague, quarreled with the Vatican about the reception with the Pope.
In the telegram sent by the Vatican to the American embassy to the Holy See, it is stated that Carla del Ponte was "irritating and ill-mannered" when she sought reception with Pope Benedict XVI.
In September 2005, the prosecutor from The Hague asked to be admitted to the Pope, because she wanted him to influence Croatia and the Catholic Church in Croatia regarding the hiding of General Ante Gotovina.
In September 2005, the prosecutor from The Hague asked to be admitted to the Pope, because she wanted him to influence Croatia and the Catholic Church in Croatia regarding the hiding of General Ante Gotovina.
Although she did not manage to see the Pope, Del Ponte met with then Secretary of State for Relations Giovanni Laiola to whom she told that "Pope John Paul II received the cash" and that she was denied an audience with the Pope.
"If Gotovina was with the Pope, he was in the group that was received by the Pope," the Vatican explained in a cable to the Americans.
"The Catholic Church protected Gotovina"
In an interview with the "Daily Telegraph", Del Ponte then confirmed that her request for an audience with the Pope was rejected, but also that she has information that Gotovina is hiding in a Franciscan monastery, "which means that the Catholic Church protects him".
After that interview, Lajola replied that the pope only receives presidents and ministers and that he told her to come "on Saturday at St. Peter's Square."
After that, Del Ponte asked former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader if Croatia was ready for an investigation into the Franciscan monasteries. He answered in the affirmative and opened an investigation in Croatia.
Del Ponte claimed that in a few days the church could determine the location where Gotovina is hiding, because it is in a Franciscan monastery in Croatia, but that the Catholic Church does not want to do that.
She also pointed out that the Catholic Church has the most developed intelligence service.
