Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today reiterated that membership in the European Union (EU) is a "strategic goal" of that country.
"Membership in the EU remains our strategic goal," Erdogan told reporters before heading to Varna, Bulgaria, for a meeting with European leaders.
He said he would convey once again to the European leaders in Varna that Ankara expects the obstacles to negotiations to be removed and the accession process to be restarted.
Tonight, Erdogan will have a working dinner with the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk.
According to France Press, the agenda will probably include the issue of the rule of law in Turkey, the controversial agreement on migrants, Turkey's stalled bid for the EU and the Turkish offensive against the Kurdish militia in Syria.
"I hope that the summit in Varna will have a positive impact on relations with the EU and on regional issues," Erdogan said.
