The decision to postpone Brexit will most likely not be made this week at the European Union (EU) summit, said the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and added that the leaders of the bloc could meet again next week.
British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to ask the EU for a Brexit delay today.
Junker said that he has not yet received a letter from the British Prime Minister.
"My impression is that no decision will be made at the European Council this week, but that we will probably have to meet again next week," Juncker told Germany's Deutschlandfunk radio, AP reports.
Juncker said there will be no new negotiations or additional guarantees, according to Reuters.
TV Sky, citing an unnamed British government source, reported that May will ask the EU for a short Brexit delay today.
Britain should officially leave the EU on March 29.
