French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France does not accept the American decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan, reports Hina.
"The president pointed out that the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan, an occupied territory, goes against international law and can only contribute to the increase in tension in the region," according to the statement published after the visit of Jordan's King Abdullah II. Paris.
Trump recognized sovereignty over the Golan
On March 21, US President Donald Trump recognized Israel's sovereignty over the Golan, marking a change in policy that the US has advocated for decades. French diplomacy immediately reacted by recalling that it opposes the Israeli annexation of that plateau in Syria, which Israel occupied in 1967.
The territory is strategically important to both countries, rich in water and rising above the Galilee and Lake Tiberias on the Israeli-controlled side.
On Friday, Emmanuel Macron received King Abdullah II, with whom he discussed regional crises, especially Syria and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"The two leaders confirmed their commitment to a political solution to the Syrian crisis as the only way to permanently extinguish the focus of instability that this crisis means for the region and for Europe," it was announced after the meeting.
"France maintains that the normalization of ties with the regime in Damascus, which is not accompanied by progress towards such an inclusive solution, would undermine all prospects for peace in Syria and thus any possibility for the safe, dignified and free return of Syrian refugees."
The meeting was also an opportunity for Paris to repeat its position that "there is no solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict without the recognition of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and recognized and safe borders with Jerusalem as the capital".
