Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg died at the age of 98, his son Henri announced today, reports Tanjug.
The Duke was recently admitted to the hospital due to a lung infection, and as stated in the announcement, he died in the hospital, surrounded by his family, the BBC reports.
Jean of Luxembourg abdicated in favor of his son Henri in 2000 after 36 years as head of state.
During Jean's reign, Luxembourg became an international financial center.
He was born on January 5, 1921. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy "Sandhurst", participated in the Normandy landings and the liberation of Luxembourg from Nazi rule.
He was married to Princess Josephine-Charlotte of Belgium and they have five children.
