The United Nations rapporteur on privacy rights met with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in a London jail, where Assange is awaiting a hearing on a US extradition request and sentencing for breaching bail conditions.
Assange's supporters said Joe Canatacci, the UN commissioner for privacy rights, met with Assange at Belmarsh prison, where Assange has been held since being charged with breaching bail conditions in connection with an earlier Swedish extradition request, Hina reports.
"We welcome the ongoing engagement of UN special mechanisms in Assange's case," Assange's lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, said after the visit.
"It is troubling that Ecuador kicked Mr. Assange out of the embassy before the UN visit could take place," Robinson said, referring to Canatati's plans to visit Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
