The long prison sentence given to Russian citizen Maria Butina is unacceptable, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Tas.
The Russian agency Tas reports that Dmitry Peskov commented on the decision of the American judiciary to sentence Butina to 18 months in prison.
"The fact that she was given a long prison sentence is unacceptable. We believe that the Russian citizen was not, nor could she have been involved in what she was accused of," said Peskov.
Thirty-one-year-old Butina admitted that she worked as a secret agent for the Kremlin, for which she was sentenced in the US to 18 months in prison.
Butina has been in custody since July 2018, which will count towards her sentence, after which she will be deported to Russia, reports Tanjug.
