The founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, was sentenced today in London to 50 weeks in prison for avoiding bail, reports Reuters.
Last month, he was formally convicted of breaching bail conditions in the UK in 2012, when he was wanted on rape charges in Sweden, which were later dropped.
The founder of WikiLeaks was arrested on April 11 when the British authorities took him out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he spent seven years. The Ecuadorian authorities revoked his asylum.
The British authorities have announced that they will not extradite Assange to Washington if there is a possibility that he will be sentenced to death in the US.
The US Department of Justice said Assange could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison for computer hacking.
Assange founded the WikiLeaks portal in 2006 to publish classified information about the activities of the governments of several countries, including the United States.
