Swedish prosecutors have decided to reopen the investigation into rape allegations against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Assange's lawyer, Per E Samuelson, said that the founder of WikiLeaks wants the case resolved and that he only fears extradition to the USA.

"I'm surprised. It's a shame for Sweden that it reopened the investigation," Samuelson said, according to Reuters.

Assange denies the charges, and in order to avoid extradition to Sweden in 2012, he took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London and received asylum, which was revoked in April and Assange was arrested and sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for violating the terms of parole.

The US is also seeking Assange's extradition for his alleged role in the 2010 release of classified military and diplomatic documents.
